Drawings at Giant Robot in New York

I'm super juiced to have three little drawings in Small Favors, an exhibit of diminutive artworks at Giant Robot in New York (437 East 9th Street).the show opened this past weekend (sorry I didn't blog about it sooner!), and runs until April 14th.

Here are my three pieces in the show. I found these great little frames at an art supply megastore, and had the idea to do traditional-style portraits (a bit Royal Tenenbaums-esque, for sure). They are about 3 x 4 inches.

Here's the flyer for the show:

Post-it note drawings at Giant Robot

I'm so excited about this: I've got a bunch of sticky note drawings in Post-It Show 4, an upcoming exhibition at GR2, Giant Robot's LA gallery. Curated by artists Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson, the show is slated to feature nearly 2,000 works by some heavyweight contributors for only $20. These pieces will be on standard-sized 3" x 3" Post-It® notes.

The show opens Saturday December 5th, and it's cash and carry. Buy the art right off the wall.

Here's a peek at the drawings I shipped off to the show:

Here's the flyer for the show:

Mustaches enjoy cycling too: a drawing for Lap the Lough

Lap the Lough is a non-profit fun cycling event outside of Belfast, Ireland. Participants bike around Lough Neagh, Ireland's largest lake (heck, it's the 3rd largest lake in Western Europe!).The organizers asked me to do a drawing for their t-shirt, and I said yes because they were so charming.

The original drawing is SOLD for sale in the shop. All proceeds from the sale of this drawing go to Lap the Lough and the charities it supports.

Boxed note cards

My book publisher, teNeues, produced this nice boxed set of note cards with reproductions of my post-it note drawings. The whole thing turned out beautifully; the drawings reproduced really well. I gave a box to my in-laws, and they use the "H is for Holy Crap" card regularly as a birthday greeting to great effect.

You can get them at places like Amazon, directly from the publisher, and other outlets. Let me know in the comments if you've spotted them in other shops.

The book is here

Hurray! Boxes of books have arrived, and they are now available in the shop ($25 + shipping). I made a small, signed drawing in each copy. And each book has a different drawing.

Barnes & Noble has the book in their stores. They placed a great order and really believe in the book, so go support them. Thanks B&N! I'm also super excited that Urban Outfitters and the MoMA in New York (2 locations) will both be carrying it.

A new marcjohns.com

A new site. A new blog. I've been wanting to do this for ages, and just haven't had the time. I was undecided for a long time as to what sort of format I wanted my 'main' site to be. Slick portfolio? Blog? Shop only? In the end, I believe a blog is the best format for me. I want this to be a central point. If you want to know what I'm up to, what I've drawn lately, you come here. I am growing a bit tired of having too many outlets to update: Flickr, Vox, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter... My primary methods of sharing my drawings have been through Vox and Flickr, both terrific sites with great communities. But it always bothered me that you had to sign up with those sites in order to leave a comment. I've had many people contact me to complain about this. But that's okay, most social networking sites require this. So now I finally have a stand-alone site that's easy to update, thanks to Typepad. I'm a graphic and web designer by trade, so I could have built a more custom solution, but I didn't want to spend time digging through the code of some CMS, spending endless hours tweaking the styling, fetching plug-ins and whathaveyou. I'd rather spend my time drawing.

So poke around, bookmark the site, subscribe to the RSS feed, leave a comment, and come back soon.
