Vision
Mixed media on cradled wooden panel, 9x12 inches. I added the extra piece of wood that's across the eyes before I was 100% sure what I was going to paint/draw. The whole piece (including the title) ended up being built around that chunk of wood.
The original is sold.
Side note: I always loved Jean-Michel Basquiat's paintings that were done on objects, boards cobbled together and other non-flat surfaces. He would either incorporate the obstacles into his work -- own them, or bulldoze through them. He was in control of whatever non-traditional painting surface was in front of him.

Love
Here's another piece done with acrylics and paint pens (same materials as this one). I find it sooooo liberating to use a different material, one that is less fussy. I painted the background of this one outside in my backyard, and the wind kept blowing dust and dirt and bits of dried leaves onto my drying paint. Once they were dry I had to use sandpaper to get the bits off. I liked the rough results, so I didn't repaint them.
I used to draw this style of figure all the time 10 or more years ago, and it's been finding its way back into my work. It's a handy 'device' for expressing so many things. I wanted to be able to make a very simple painting about love, how it radiates, but without making it too cutesy. This fellow helped me out with that.
This piece is sold.
Hooray for today
I've been experimenting with acrylics and paint pens lately, trying some new approaches to tackle my imagery. I ended up making a series of 10 pieces, which I shared last night through my shop newsletter, and they sold out overnight. Yikes!

I wanted a rougher, more textured approach. I had all of these nice 8 x 10 inch pieces of really thick cardboard lying around that were from the packages of watercolour paper that I use -- I had been saving them for a project like this. I primed them with house paint, but wanted to leave some of the cardboard showing so I left the edges bare. I also used artist acrylic paint and oil-based paint pens to do all the line work.
I've been a long time fan of Inuit art, folk art and outsider art, and I feel like some of those influences had a chance to come out and play in this series.
I'll definitely be making more pieces like this, maybe bigger in size too.
(the above piece is sold)
